Funding Your Home Care in Bournemouth

Understanding the Options for Paying for Care

We understand that arranging care is about more than choosing the right provider. It's also about understanding how to pay for it. The cost of home care can feel daunting, and the funding landscape isn't always easy to navigate. At Silverstead Homecare, we're here to help you make sense of your options so you can access the care you need without unnecessary stress.

Funding Your Home Care

Whether you're funding care privately, exploring local authority support, or looking into NHS funded options, this page explains the main routes available to you.

Private Self Funding

If you have savings, income, or assets that allow you to pay for care directly, you can arrange and fund your home care privately. Private funding gives you full control over the type, frequency, and timing of your care.

With Silverstead Homecare, you benefit from:

  • Complete flexibility over your care plan and schedule

  • No waiting lists or local authority assessments required

  • A clear, transparent pricing structure with no hidden fees

  • The ability to start care quickly, often within days

Local Authority Funded Care

If you have limited savings or income, you may be eligible for local authority funded care. BCP Council (Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council) can carry out a needs assessment and a financial assessment to determine what support you're entitled to.

How it works:

Step 1

Care needs assessment

The local authority assesses your care needs to decide whether you're eligible for funded support.

Step 2

Financial assessment (means test)

They assess your finances to determine how much, if anything, you'll need to contribute towards the cost of your care.

Step 3

Direct payments

If you qualify, you may receive direct payments, which give you the money to arrange and manage your own care. You can choose Silverstead Homecare as your provider.

Step 4

Managed budget

Alternatively, the local authority may arrange care on your behalf and pay the provider directly.

Personal Health Budgets (PHBs)

A Personal Health Budget is an amount of money allocated by the NHS to support your health and wellbeing needs. It's available to people with long term conditions, complex health needs, or those receiving NHS Continuing Healthcare.

With a PHB, you have more choice and control over how your healthcare needs are met. You can use the budget to pay for home care services from a provider you trust, including Silverstead Homecare.

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)

NHS Continuing Healthcare is a package of care that is fully funded by the NHS for individuals who have a primary health need. It's not means tested, which means your savings and assets are not taken into account.
To qualify for CHC, you'll need to go through an assessment process that evaluates your care needs across several domains, including breathing, nutrition, mobility, continence, skin integrity, behaviour, cognition, and communication.
If you're found eligible, the NHS funds your care in full. This can include home care delivered by Silverstead Homecare.

NHS Funded Nursing Care (FNC)

If you don't qualify for full CHC but have nursing needs, you may be eligible for NHS Funded Nursing Care, which covers the nursing element of your care. This can be used alongside other funding sources.

Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance is a benefit paid by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to people aged 65 or over who need help with personal care or supervision due to a physical or mental condition. It's not means tested and doesn't depend on whether you've paid National Insurance.

There are two rates:

  • Lower rate for people who need help during the day or night

  • Higher rate for people who need help both during the day and at night

Carer's Allowance

If you're a family member or friend providing regular care, you may be eligible for Carer's Allowance. This is a weekly payment from the government for people who spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with substantial care needs.
While Carer's Allowance isn't paid directly to the person receiving care, it can help support the financial pressures that come with a caring role.
